Qualex-Landmark™ contributes to art in the Beltline’s Design District

The Design District, aptly named for its avant-garde furniture and home décor shops, contemporary art galleries, and trendy architectural offices, has notably become one of the City’s most desirable neighbourhoods for young professionals. In recent years there has been an influx of burgeoning trendiness as new residents turn the District into a hotbed of new restaurants, cafes, and culture.
MARK on 10th, Qualex-Landmark™ group’s fifth residential tower located in the heart of the Design District, is perfectly suited to this new breed of hip professional; one who wants to live, work, and play in the same neighbourhood. The building, designed by Rafii Architects, boasts a 2-storey amenity deck on its top floors and a custom large scale art piece by world renowned artist, and Order of Canada recipient, Douglas Coupland.
Commissioning Coupland to create an art piece for MARK has enabled Qualex-Landmark™ to play a role in developing the emerging Design District, and Calgary’s public art overall.

Coupland’s portrait of modern Calgary in the lobby of MARK on 10th features a series of coloured targets that represent flora, fauna and institutional elements of the City on an optical level. “I wanted to make this very intense colour pesto to put on the wall, so, if it’s winter out, you could change your mood,” says Douglas Coupland. “The forms become signs that will, across time, mellow and ripen within a viewer’s memory, also acting as a smart and anticipated ‘welcome home’ moment.”
Qualex-Landmark group is also bringing innovative and iconic architecture to the Beltline with their newest development, Park Point, currently under construction. Designed by global architectural firm IBI Group, the 34-storey residential condo tower features a sophisticated sculptural expression, contemporary style, and a strikingly unique architectural façade that will distinguish it as a landmark for years to come.
