The top 3 best Calgary neighbourhoods, according to Avenue Magazine

With nearly 200 neighbourhoods in Calgary that people could call home, three stand out for their local flare and safety, according to Avenue magazine.
For nearly 10 years, Avenue has been asking Calgarians for their take on what makes their neck of the woods a great place to live and play. Using that information, the magazine ranks the city’s top residential communities.
Through the online Best Neighbourhoods Survey, Calgarians rate how important things like crime rate, walkability, public transit and recreation were to where they chose to settle in the city.
Using those results, Avenue partnered with Leger and collected City of Calgary, Calgary Police Service and other data to rank the neighbourhoods and find the top three. So what do Calgarians value most in their community?
The top three characteristics for 2018 were:
“This year the most surprising news was the consensus on the characteristics that rank Calgary’s residential neighbourhoods,” editor in chief Kathe Lemon said in a statement.
The three neighbourhoods in Calgary that residents think have the most to offer, according to Avenue, are Beltline, Arbour Lake and Hamptons.
Beltline
The Beltline neighbourhood, which is bounded by 17 Avenue S.W., features shops, restaurants and boutiques that sell everything from retro furniture, vinyl and gifts, according to Google. The Calgary Stampede Grounds are also located in the growing downtown neighbourhood.
The Beltline Neighbourhood Association (BNA) is active in the community, boasting unique events like the three-day Beltline Urban Murals Project, also known as B.U.M.P, which takes place at the end of August.
“Another interesting attraction is the McHugh House,” said BNA community coordinator Jamal Hamadeh.
The historic house was moved and renovated years ago and is now home to the neighbourhood community hub.
“We have several community organizations who are renting office space in the McHugh House, and we are continually activating the main space with diverse, all-ages, community programming,” Hamadeh said.
As for Hamadeh’s favourite part? “The events that bring the community together!”
Arbour Lake
Nestled in the northwest of Calgary, Arbour Lake features a lake where rainbow trout can be spotted swimming around, parks and even mountain views, according to the community’s website.
A regional bike and walking path also winds through the rolling hills of the community.
The community hosts several family-friendly events including teen night with beach volleyball and a DJ, family bingo and outdoor movies.
Hamptons
The Hamptons neighbourhood is located in the northwest end of the city was established in 1990, and according to the homeowners association website, it’s “one of the nicest northwest communities.”
“The area offers residents lots of green space and recreational opportunities.”
The community also boasts playgrounds, ball diamonds, tennis courts and an Olympic-sized hockey rink.
